Camp miniwanca history

The first mention of Camp Miniwanca dates back to the annual report of 1956, and it was held in Stoney Lake, Michigan. The Danforth Foundation of the Ralston Purina Company sponsored delegates. Doris Pruitt, who attended the camp in 1956, wrote an essay titled “My Camp Miniwanca Experience.” The 1950s saw the continuation of separate activities for black 4-H members. The organization hired nine black agents to work in 16 counties in 1955, with 2,663 youth enrolled in the organization.

For almost 90 years, Camp Miniwanca has been providing leadership training in the area of Stony Lake. The AYF and its philosophy of four-fold development originated at the Pennsylvania YMCA and later developed into the American Youth Foundation, which emphasizes a balance of physical, mental, religious, and social aspects of life. Miniwanca’s founding philosophy is rooted in that of the YMCA, which is still active in the Adirondacks today.

It is AYF's longest running program

AYF Camp was started on the West Coast in 1969. The first session had 35 participants. In 1977, the AYF purchased a campground called Camp Big Pines and has been running AYF Camp since then. While it is the oldest program of the organization, the first session was not held at the campground. Today, AYF Camp continues to grow and welcomes first-year campers.

The Academic Year in Freiburg program was developed in partnership with four universities. Students can improve their German language skills with classes taught by international and local students. The program also includes support services and internships in areas related to the field of study. The program begins with an intensive German language course, with the option of taking topic courses specifically designed for AYF participants. Students then continue to study their field of study through a combination of classes taught by local peers and by a renowned language professor.

Since its founding, AYF Camp has grown into an eight-week program and has more than 900 campers. While the program has expanded, the camp’s trademark traditions remain. Wacky Olympics, educationals, and Butt Volleyball continue to be part of the daily schedule. The program also promotes healthy development.
