Leadership Harrisburg Area is a non-profit organization with a mission to improve the Capital Region. It trains leaders to serve the community and to practice servant leadership. Its graduates are involved in community service, large organizations, and corporations. Leadership Harrisburg Area has produced more than 1,500 graduates in its 35-year history.

The board of the Penn State Harrisburg Alumni Society recently announced that four new directors were elected: Janak Amin, a 1994 graduate of the MBA program, Christopher Barrett, a senior vice president at Waypoint Bank, and Doug Wisehaupt, a graduate of Leadership Harrisburg. All four have been active in the community and are members of organizations that help those affected by cancer.

Metz lives in Camp Hill, Cumberland County, and is a member of the board of directors of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce. He is also the past event chair for Light the Night Walk and serves on the board of the American Heart Association Capital Region Division. He is a graduate of Leadership Harrisburg Area and was named to the Central Penn Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 list. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Juniata College.

The Rotary Club of Harrisburg is unique in that they focus on the needs of the local community. The largest recipient of their philanthropic dollars is the Harrisburg School District. The Rotary Club of Harrisburg also aims to engage others to serve their community. This community involvement provides students with a unique learning opportunity.

Leaders in the Greater Harrisburg Area network with accomplished leaders who share information, form partnerships, and reach out to outside leaders for accelerated growth. As a result, they can help each other grow and improve their companies. There are numerous peer groups in Central PA, including High Family Business Center and Vistage. There are also different kinds of peer groups. Some peer groups are exclusively for CEOs and other senior executives, while others are geared toward smaller and more strategic organizations.

Leadership Harrisburg Area has a mission of improving the quality of life for the people of Central Pennsylvania through servant leadership and effective community service. Among its programs, the group recently held a civility forum on racial justice and invited nine community experts to speak. The forum lasted over two hours online, and an audience of more than 300 people took part. The group has also partnered with the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Development Institute to offer programs that promote civic engagement and social good.

Stacey Gibson, a past president of the Financial Planning Association of Central PA and a graduate of Leadership Harrisburg Area, is a member of the organization and a member of the finance committee. She also serves as the past president of the Manheim Community Library and is a mentor for youth in Finance Park. She is married and has three college-aged sons.

After graduating, Alumni Circle graduates can join the program’s alumni group, which meets once a month to further their leadership development. This is an offshoot of the main program. One group read The Servant Leader’s Manifesto by Omar Harris, and members decided they wanted Harris to speak to the class of 2021.
