The Sylmar Leadership Academy (SLA) is a new program conceptualized by the Sylmar Leadership Council as a way to enhance and accelerate leadership development in the community. The program offers a unique opportunity for local residents, education leaders, parents, students and organizations to work together over the course of six weeks for the primary purpose of developing leadership skills. We believe that by taking an intentional approach to accelerating leadership development within our community, we can create a ripple effect that empowers people and communities everywhere. The SLA will be offered in partnership with Los Angeles Mission College and is free of charge to all participants.

What are the goals of the Sylmar Leadership Academy?

The mission of the SLA is to help develop leadership skills in participants by providing an environment that encourages creative problem solving, collaboration, and learning. We also hope to produce candidates who possess a sincere desire to positively impact their communities. Since the SLA is a new program, our primary goal is to understand if it can positively impact the community we serve. We want to know if the program is delivering what we had hoped for. We also want to understand if there is any opportunity for expansion, improvement or refinement. Our goals for the SLA are to build community capacity through the development of leadership skills and interdependence, increase collaboration and create a safe space for learning, and provide a platform for positive social change.

How does the SLA work?

The program is six weeks long, with two one-hour sessions per week. Participants will meet with their assigned “mentor” on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30am-1:30pm at the Los Angeles Mission College on West Temple Street in Downtown Los Angeles. Each mentee is paired with a mentor who will support them both academically and socially throughout the program. Each mentee will be paired with a mentor based on the mentee’s age, grade level, and their friends and/or family members who are SLA participants.

Who is eligible to participate in the SLA?

The mentee in the sylmar leadership academy must be an Angelino resident between the ages of 11-18 and have a current GPA of 2.6 or higher. In addition, participants must have a minimum of 14 months remaining until graduation. Those who do not meet this requirement will be permitted to participate as a mentee.
