The Washington Leadership Academy is a unique program that develops the skills of future leaders through an intensive cohort-based experience. The program’s curriculum focuses on understanding systemic racism, poverty, and oppression, and is designed to increase the adaptive leadership capacity of organizations and advocates working toward equity in Washington State. Fellows of the Leadership Academy are drawn from a variety of community-based and justice-system organizations. In addition to law students, the program includes people from the community.
Students of the WLA are taught by experts in their fields, which gives them an advantage over traditional classroom settings. This enables them to explore a range of subjects and gain hands-on experience. In addition to rigorous core classes, the school offers student-selected electives and projects. This allows students to be involved in emerging technologies and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Students of the Washington Leadership Academy come from a diverse background. The program was started in 2004 by the WSBA’s Board of Governors and seeks to recruit and train underrepresented attorneys. Using a collaborative leadership approach, the program involves training and peer mentoring. In addition, participants will receive instruction on the “nuts and bolts” of law practice, and leadership styles, as well as the judicial and legislative processes.
Students at the Washington Leadership Academy are college and career-ready, and equipped with technological skills that will help them make positive changes in their communities. The academy is proud to support the Washington Leadership Academy and is a public charter high school that serves underserved communities in the District of Columbia. The academy also provides students with international travel and professional internships, as well as an array of other educational experiences.
