What is leadership? Are there levels of leadership? How do you know if someone is leading from a high level or a low level? Are there different kinds of leadership? The answer to all these questions is probably “yes” and the answers are complex. Leaders come in many shapes and sizes — some are small, some are large, and some are global. There are many levels of leadership, just as there are many types of people. But what we typically mean when we refer to different levels of leadership is that they’re all part of one spectrum — a continuum that ranges from being a follower to being an author. The leader lies somewhere on this continuum and must learn how to move up the ladder accordingly.

What Are the Levels of Leadership?

The terms “leader” and “manager” are often used synonymously, but they have different meanings. A manager is a person who is in charge of others and who regulates their actions. A leader is someone who “runs the organization” and “fosters growth” (e.g., through inspiration, strong personalities, and clear expectations). Some people also use the terms “boss” and “manager” synonymously, but that’s a misnomer. The boss is the person who hired you, while the manager is the person who oversees and reports to the boss. In other industries, the term “manager” is used as a title and a job title, so here it is used as a noun to describe a person who holds a management position.

What Is the Difference between a Leader and a Manager?

The main difference between a leader and a manager is that a manager is in charge of others and a leader “runs the organization.” This does not mean that a manager has total control of the situation — quite the opposite, in fact. A good manager derives their authority from the fact that they have the insight and knowledge to make sure things turn out well for the organization as a whole. Leaders, on the other hand, have total control over the people they lead.

What Is the Difference between a Patron and an Influencer?

A patron is someone who supports the leader financially, but who is not necessarily involved in the day-to-day activities of the organization. A patron is often referred to as an authority figure, and the relationship is often transactional. This is the difference between a patron and an influencer: The patron is the leader, while the influencer is the product that the patron represents.

What Is the Difference between an Author and an Expert?

An author is someone who wrote a book, while an expert is someone who knows something about something — in this case, leadership. While an author might have spent his or her life researching Leadership, the process of doing so might have yielded only a dry,000-word report — an expert takes that report and turns it into an important contribution. An expert is someone whose knowledge and understanding of a topic is deep enough to inspire confidence and make a difference. As the example above shows, an expert can make a significant impact on an audience and change their perceptions on a wide range of issues at the same time.
