The Capitol Leadership program is an educational experience for students that gives them the chance to work with elected officials and learn various leadership skills. The program gives participants the opportunity to meet with local, state and national officials and develop their skills as leaders in their communities. The goal of Capitol Leadership is to create stronger leaders at the local and state level, while helping students achieve their full potential. Here are some of the benefits of participating in Capitol Leadership:
Capital Leadership is a four-day conference where members of FCCLA will learn more about leadership skills, network with industry professionals, and meet new friends. The event will take place Nov. 5-7, 2021, in Washington, DC. It is followed by the Joint Leadership Development Conference (JLDC), the largest non-athletic gathering of students in the Southeastern United States. During this conference, students will learn more about leadership and how to effectively network.
The conference will feature over 200,000 FCCLA members and more than 5,500 chapters nationwide. The conference will include team events, competitions and exhibits. This event provides a great opportunity for students to gain experience working with elected officials and forming relationships. At FCCLA meetings, they will learn about the importance of leadership skills and get training in strategic planning and networking. In addition, students will learn about leadership and advocacy, and develop new skills to help them achieve their goals.
The organization is open to students in grades six through twelve. It is a nonprofit organization that provides leadership development opportunities for students who are enrolled in FACS courses and aspire to make a positive difference in their communities. The organization’s mission is to empower youth to develop a positive impact on the lives of their families, communities and society. The organization focuses on developing leadership skills in both students and educators. Its members learn how to effectively engage in leadership opportunities in their communities and develop their own personal leadership skills.
FCCLA and Capitol Leadership
As an active member of FCCLA, Damien McLaughlin has participated in several leadership programs, including the renowned Expert Advocate concentration at the FCCLA Leadership Academy. Besides advocating for youth, he has also served as a state officer, first vice president, and national committee member. Among other achievements, he has attended Capitol Leadership, a program that prepares students to become powerful leaders at the state and local levels.
The event features leadership development training, advocacy and government relations, and meeting with elected officials. The students gain valuable skills and learn about how to be effective advocates for Family and Consumer Sciences education. Moreover, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) placed Capitol Leadership on its Advisory List of Contests and Activities. In addition, the event includes career-focused skill demonstration competitions and team-building activities. The students are given the opportunity to present their ideas and make an impression on their policymakers.
This annual event allows FCCLA members to expand their leadership skills and grow as a club. Members can attend the event, which takes place Nov. 5-7, 2021, in Washington DC, or in Alabama at the Joint Leadership Development Conference (JLDC) the next week. The JLDC is the largest non-athletic gathering of students in the Southeastern United States. During this event, students are exposed to industry leaders and learn about different leadership styles.
The FCCLA is a national student organization with more than 175,000 members and 5,300 chapters throughout the United States. In addition to leadership development, FCCLA chapters work on important issues facing young people today. These include teen pregnancy, substance abuse, peer pressure, nutrition, and career exploration. Regardless of the location, the FCCLA program helps students develop life skills and develop their leadership potential. A number of leadership opportunities can be found at these events, including the Capitol Leadership Conference and National Fall Conference.
FCCLA's Capitol Leadership Conference
In November, a delegation of Purdy students traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the FCCLA Capitol Leadership Conference. The purpose of the event was to challenge students to “Make it Count.” Students participated in advocacy training and a role-playing game on Hill Day, as well as a rally for a political candidate of their choice. At Purdy, the delegation was also able to support the organization by purchasing 500 pairs of socks for the nonprofit “We Help Two.”
The upcoming Capitol Leadership conference is a once-a-year opportunity for all affiliated members to attend. Participants will engage in workshops on government relations, advocacy, and meeting elected officials. The event is considered the ultimate leadership experience and is endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. It provides youth with a chance to meet with their elected officials and learn how to advocate for the importance of family and consumer sciences education. It is a must-attend event for advisers of FCCLA chapters.
National FCCLA hosts several events each year that bring students from all over the country together. Student leadership conferences and adviser conferences are also held each year. The National Leadership Conference draws over 7,000 students and delegates to Washington, D.C. Every year, over 7,000 FCCLA students attend this conference, which serves as the premier gathering of FCCLA students and advisers. It is a great experience for both students and adults alike.
As a student organization, FCCLA focuses on leadership development and personal growth. Students learn about the various roles of a wage earner, a community leader, and a member of a family. Through leadership training and participation in events, students develop important leadership skills that will help them in their future. And the meetings and competitions held at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference are an excellent opportunity to network with members from all over the country.
