South bend economic development

For many years, entrepreneurship and economic development in South Bend, Indiana, was an afterthought. The town’s population dropped significantly after the automotive and aerospace industries went out of business, and it became a “dying city.” But in the last few years, this city has taken the next step by repositioning itself for the digital age by focusing on education, healthcare, and small business growth. South Bend’s population continued to decline, largely because it struggled to keep up with the global economy and maintain its aerospace and automotive manufacturing base.

With its entrepreneurial spirit, the city has taken a number of steps to revitalize the downtown. For instance, it has repurposed the former Studebaker complex as the center of a tech-forward vision. Besides providing low-interest loans and grants to entrepreneurs, the South Bend Community Bootcamp also conducts research on entrepreneurs and tracks their progress to see what works and what doesn’t.
