Dr. Sarah

Dr. David H. Padden
Founder of the Heartland Institute and former director of Cato Institute, David H. Padden passed away at his home on October 5, 2018. He was a major player in the libertarian movement, having founded the Cato Institute, the Acton Institute, and the Bionomics Institute. Padden also served on the board of directors of the Heartland Institute. He was the institute’s first chairman emeritus and financial benefactor.
A major blow to Heartland was the loss of substantial corporate funding. Telecommunications giant AT&T, financial values firm BB&T, and alcoholic beverage giant Diageo pulled out of the conference. State Farm, and about two dozen insurance companies also backed out. Since the Heartland billboard controversy, Heartland has had to cut back on their climate conferences. In fact, the organization is downsizing.
The Heartland Institute did not disclose its finances. The organization’s board received more than $612 thousand dollars for a conference titled “The Heartland Institute: A New Era in American Politics”. Despite its low-profile status, it continues to grow as a force in the political debate. However, some people are skeptical about the heartland initiative. Although Dr. David H. Padden’s work is primarily limited to political analysis, he has been called out on numerous occasions for his otrzymane platnosci.
One of the main sources of information about climate change is a book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway. While both authors have published widely on political and economic topics, Arnn was appointed by HUD Secretary Jack Kemp to the Advisory Commission on Barriers to Affordable Housing. Among the panelists are Dr. Michael Warder, former executive vice president of the Rockford Institute and the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C. He is also the founder of the equipment leasing company, Padco.
Dr. Joseph L. Bast
In his last public appearance, Joe Bast stepped down as CEO of the Heartland Institute. He served as its president and CEO from 1984 to July 2017. He was succeeded by Dr. Tim Huelskamp, who became the organization’s CEO and president in January 2018. Bast remained on the Heartland Institute board until January 2019.
In the 1980s, the American Conservative Party dominated government and policymaking, but Bast and his colleagues made significant contributions. In 1988, the Chicago Tribune named him one of the “88 to Watch” in America. He received the Roe Award from State Policy Network, the Sir Antony Fisher International Memorial Award from the Eagle Forum, the Eagle Award in 1998, and the Edward Teller Award for Defense of Freedom in 2004.
Despite the criticism, the Heartland Institute’s CEO Steve Bast wrote an email to supporters on Oct. 12, 2017 that was leaked to E&E News. Bast suggested convincing courts and EPA to increase CO2 emissions. He further suggested filing lawsuits against companies that don’t increase emissions. But that’s just one approach. The Heartland leadership initiative must be vigilant.
Heartland Institute’s newly appointed president, Dr. Tim Huelskamp, gave the inaugural address at the institute’s Picnic for Freedom event. The picnic was held at the institute’s Arlington Heights headquarters. Joe Walsh, the former host of AM 560, is now syndicated on the Salem Radio Network. Several heartland leaders attended the event, including Dr. Joseph Bast, whose wife Diane worked for the institute almost as closely as her husband.
