The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and the University of Utah have an educational exchange and a partnership dating back more than 30 years. Students from both institutions receive credits for participating in the school’s semester-long NOLS course. Since the school has a long history of collaborating with the University, faculty at the university have reviewed NOLS’s curriculum and instructor qualifications. The partnership promotes process-oriented research and educational exchange. A scholarship is offered each year to University of Utah students who are interested in taking a NOLS course.
In addition to developing leadership skills, students develop confidence through leadership in unfamiliar terrain. Moreover, students develop decision-making skills and become better at dealing with people who don’t know them well. While navigating the wilderness, students learn how to lead others in stressful situations. This skill develops grit and levelheadedness.
The National Outdoor Leadership School offers leadership training and wilderness education programs for students ages 14 and up. The courses offered by NOLS encourage students to develop seven essential leadership skills. The students develop skills in communication, self-awareness, tolerance for adversity, judgment, and decision-making. They also develop teamwork and environmental awareness. NOLS graduates are prepared to lead in college and their careers.
The National Outdoor Leadership School offers semester-based courses. The students take two or three courses per semester. The curriculum is centered on experiential learning. In this way, the school is able to meet the needs of different students. It also allows for flexibility. Students can complete courses on the same day or at different times during the week. They can also choose to earn a certificate or a degree while attending the school. They can even combine a program with a job.
The NOLS program teaches outdoor survival, wilderness medicine, and leadership skills to its students. The course takes place in remote locations around the world. Students can participate in expeditions that last for a week or more, depending on the program chosen. It is important to note that the courses are aimed at different age groups and skill levels. And the courses are taught by professionals in their fields. So, no matter where you’re from, there’s a NOLS course that will fit your schedule and your goals.
